Module 1: What’s the Real Reason You Can’t Sleep?

Restful sleep is vital for experiencing health, healing, resilience, and overall wellbeing. Richard Miller, PhD, and Amer Khan, MD, discuss the neuroscience and practices that underlie and support our experiencing restful sleep.
Richard Miller, PhD, is a clinical psychologist, author, researcher, yogic scholar, and spiritual teacher who, for the past 48 years has been integrating western psychology and neuroscience with the ancient nondual wisdom teachings of Yoga. Richard is president of the Integrative Restoration Institute, co-founder of the International Association of Yoga Therapists, founding editor of the peer-reviewed International Journal of Yoga Therapy, and past president of the Institute for Spirituality and Psychology. Author of seveal books, Richard also serves as a research consultant studying the meditation protocol he’s developed (Integrative Restoration ~ iRest® Meditation), a modern adaptation of the ancient non-dual practice of Yoga Nidra. He researches its efficacy on health, healing, and wellbeing with diverse populations that include military, veterans, women rescued from human trafficking, youth and college students, and the homeless and incarcerated, who are dealig with such issues as sleep disorders, PTSD, chronic pain, chemical dependency, and anxiety. Richard leads international trainings and meditation retreats on the integration of enlightened living into daily life.
Amer Khan, sleep medicine physician, is passionate about innovation, mind-body connection, wellness, and holistic health care. He started his journey with training in pediatrics, followed by a fellowship in pediatric neurology, becoming intrigued along the way in the integral and pivotal role played by sleep in the human body. He received Board Certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Child Neurology, and later in Sleep Medicine. He followed the path to learning about and utilizing iRest and cognitive behavior therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) in his practice to benefit a large number of his patients with insomnia. He is presently involved in writing about his experiences with his patients in a book about insomnia and in research on the effects of iRest on sleep.
